Le choix du titre fait référence à l'expression française « La petite mort » paru au XVIe siècle , désignant à l’origine un étourdissement ou des frissons nerveux et qui fut par la suite réutilisée pour parler de l'orgasme.

De la série sur la féminité, dessinée au micro-pointe, l'illustration est dans un style réaliste.
Elle représente un papillon Sphinx à tête de mort « Acherontia atropos » dont la position de son corps et de ses ailes rappelle la forme du clitoris.
